THE CONTRIBUTION OF CELSO FURTADO TO NORTHEAST BRAZIL: FROM THE SOURCE OF SUDENE TO CURRENT TRANSFORMATIONS

This work has as main objective to present an analysis on the birth and the transformations in the Superintendence of the Development of the Northeast (SUDENE) from some selected works of its major interlocutor, Celso Furtado. We will try to analyze how the author influenced the institution, as well as the initial prerogatives that have changed over time. Our work is justified, above all by the need to retake social thought as the guiding principle of national regional development programs. We advocate the idea that at present, it is fundamental to reflect on the theoretical and practical contribution of Celso Furtados economic thinking (1920-2004) to Brazilian regional development. In this sense, the analysis of some works by the Paraíbaan intellectual shows the centrality that the regional theme, guiding his praxis in the positions he occupied during his public life, was also able to boost the birth of Sudene.
